ELDERS LIVESTOCK MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS (ELMS)

ELMS is the most advanced package of training, livestock management and producer support programs available in Australia.

Delivered and supported nationally by Livestock Central and Elders, ELMS offers Australian producers unsurpassed access to advanced production systems, training and support.

ELMS combines the multidisciplinary expertise and experience of Livestock Central with the national support network of Elders, to deliver a range of practical systems that give producers greater control over the productive and reproductive potential of their enterprises and stock.

ELMS is based on the premise that the profitability of all animal production enterprises is fundamentally determined by the efficiency with which an animal converts the available feed into meat, milk, wool or new progeny. This is known as Feed Conversion Efficiency.

In most Australian livestock grazing enterprises, animals are consuming between 2 and 5 times more feed than is required for the amount of meat or wool that they produce. This represents a significant loss of efficiency, one that potentially increases the cost of production, results in greater impact on the land and pasture (i.e. impairs sustainability) and limits potential stocking rates.

ELMS aims to address this inefficiency by providing producers with greater control over the nutritional, metabolic and physiological health of animals at critical stages of the production cycle.

This has been achieved by the development of a series of ELMS Protocols. The ELMS Protocols are a day-by-day, step-by-step guide to the superior management of animals at each of the key production points. Producers are supported in the implementation of the ELMS Protocols by workshops, specially trained Elders personnel, direct access to the Livestock Central technical team and additional support materials such as the ELMS Technical Notes.

Examples of available ELMS Protocols include:

  • Advanced Weaning Management
  • Advanced Transport Management
  • Advanced Calving and Lambing Management
  • Advanced Joining Management (for both natural mating systems and artificial reproduction programs)
  • Advanced Intensive Feeding Management
  • Advanced Green Feed and Fodder Crop Management
  • Advanced Dry Feed and Stubble Management
