ADVANCED TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT

Cattle and sheep are subjected to a number of critical physiological and nutritional challenges during yarding, handling and transport.

These challenges significantly reduce the animal's appetite and limit their ability to absorb critical nutrients from their diet. Stress also causes hormonal and metabolic changes that increase the rate of loss of both fluid and critical nutrients from their bodies.

Stressed animals experience rapid increases in demand on their nervous systems. In addition, they tend to ‘burn' much larger amounts of the stored carbohydrates in their muscle tissue in order to meet their energy requirements.

Cattle and sheep that are unable to meet the increased demand for critical nutrients caused by the stress of yarding, handling and transport are much more likely to:

  • Produce lower carcase yields and lower quality meat;
  • Have a higher incidence of ‘dark cutters';
  • Lose a higher % of bodyweight during transport;
  • Be more difficult to handle;
  • Produce higher levels of effluent in transit;
  • Suffer from an increased incidence of pinkeye and respiratory infections;
  • Take longer to adapt to new feeds;
  • Grow more slowly and require more feed to achieve a target weight;
  • Suffer from metabolic diseases such as Transit Tetany and Ketosis.

Livestock Central delivers world leading stress management techniques and technology designed specifically to minimise the adverse effects of transport.
